Mary Josephine Watters Hartney
Mary Josphine Watters Hartney, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away in her
home on July 7, 2019, at the age of 89. She was born on March 5, 1930, to Avery Hunt
Watters and Ethel Mae O’Connor Watters. She was raised in Rome, Georgia, along
with her two brothers and three sisters. As a young adult, she worked for the Federal
Bureau of Investigation in Washington DC. She married Edwin Curtis Hartney on
December 3, 1955. They were married for 58 years. Together they raised three
children, Daniel Curtis Hartney, Kathleen Erin Hartney Kellum, and Karen Ruth Hartney.
She dedicated her life to her family. She was as a committed wife and loving mother.
Another great passion in life was her art. She was a skilled painter. She will be
remembered for her kindness and gentle spirit.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, husband, son, one sister, and two
brothers. She is survived by her daughters; Kathleen Hartney Kellum and her husband,
Kelly Kellum, of Richmond, Indiana, Karen Hartney of Taylors, South Carolina; and two
sisters Sara Claire Milton and Jane Marie Perry, both of Titusville, Florida.
A memorial service in her honor will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.
